<p>Birthstones have always offered us something special, haven’t they? Based on the planetary ruler of our birth sign, they can offer us strength in areas that may be lacking or they can help to subdue a particular quality that may be too prominent in our birth charts. That is why it’s important to wear the correct stone that corresponds to your zodiac sign. Unfortunately, most people are not aware that our modern Western birthstone system no longer reflects the accuracy of our birthstones.</p>
<p>The origins of our birthstones take place in the Bible where the Book of Revelations describes twelve gems as the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem. The order in which these twelve gems are presented determine the birthstone for each zodiac sign and its planetary ruler, not for the month of birth. As a result of being altered and revised over the centuries (the list of natural birthstones was altered in 1912, 1938, and again in 1952) to include variations, substitutions, and more widely available stones for each month of the year, the Western monthly system of birthstones is no longer correct. The closest system to the original astrological system is the Eastern system, often referred to as Vedic Astrology. In this system, each zodiac sign is ruled by a planet and each planet rules over gemstones according to their color and properties. Collectively, these gemstones are referred to as the Navaratna (Nah-vah-raht-nah), or the nine astral gems.</p>
<p>These natural gemstones play an important role in healing. Used in India for over 3,000 years, Vedic astrology identifies gemstone attributes for each of the seven planets and the two Lunar Nodes, Ketu and Rahu, which comprise the nine astral gems. Understanding how these gemstones transmit and reflect planetary rays, and how they increase planetary influences in one’s life, is the science behind Vedic gemology.</p>
<p>In the interest of accuracy and simplicity, many of our pieces in this collection are labeled by the corresponding planetary ruler or zodiac sign based on the Vedic system. Pieces based on the Western birthstone system are labeled by month. Stones for the seven planets and two lunar nodes are also listed below with other helpful information. Although each planet’s influences are more appropriately strengthened by its original corresponding stone, they may also be strengthened to a lesser degree by the vibrational effects of color from substitute stones. Therefore, an appropriate color may be substituted for original stones.</p>

<p>The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel or disk and represents the energy centers located in the body. They are described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head with each center corresponding to endocrine glands and major nerves branching forth from the spinal column. They serve as the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our energy body, commonly referred to as our aura. Their function is to vitalize the physical body and bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, stone, specific functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, developmental stages of life, sounds, body functions, and other distinguishing characteristics.</p>
<p>The stones for the seven energy centers are listed below.
